2020 Tecumseh Council Fall Camporee at Camp Hugh Taylor Birch
Orienteering Training, Afternoon Competition, and Night-O/Search-and-Destroy-O
On Oct 3, the Bond family provided training and orienteering courses for the Tecumseh Council’s Fall Camporee. So even though there was not a Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience Festival, we were still orienteering that weekend, with the Pumpkin Hunt scheduled for the next day at the camp.
Thanks for David Niederbaumer who organized the Camporee and wanted to include orienteering as part of it. The morning was geocaching and Scout skills, then in the afternoon was training and the competition by patrol, and then we put on a Night-O followed by the always popular Seach-and-Destroy-O. During the time before the Night-O started, Sharon Bond described the Vampire-O, which got a lot of attention from the Scouts. So if we are able to do this again next year, expect the Night-O to become a Vampire-O.
Points were awarded in a patrol-based competition. Each patrol broke into separate individual teams, with the combined score for all teams determining the winner. If a team successfully completed the white course, they earned 20 points, with a time bonus of 1 point for every minute below 20 (the goal time). If they did not complete it, they got 1 point for every control punched. If a team successfully completed the yellow course, they earned 30 points, with a time bonus of 1 point for every minute below 30 (goal time). If they did not complete it, they got 1 point for every control punched. If a team successfully completed the orange course, they earned 50 points, with a time bonus of 1 point for every minute below 45 (goal time).
Originally we said we would take off points on yellow and orange for being overtime. That rule was quickly abandoned when all of the teams were coming in significantly over the goal time. Then we instituted a new rule where a team could gain 10 easy bonus points for just starting a second course (second course would not count for points.) Lots of teams took us up on that offer, and that bonus helped determine winners.
For the Night-O, we just let the Scouts form teams and they competed by team.
It was standard Night-O and Search-and-Destroy-O rules, with the Scouts
catching on very quickly that the purpose was to not make the Bonds clean up.
But there was 1 control no one went out to get, #12 on the MVAS observatory
fence, that Matt rode out on his mountain bike in the dark to retrieve. There
was also a point that could be gained by bringing in a control stand, and ghosts
were hung at 3 controls for even more potential points.
